Reddit Discusses The Best Social Media Marketing Advice They Received: Engagement And Followers ‘Mean Nothing.’

Social media marketing is a complex strategy to get in front of more people. Business owners can choose from several platforms, and then they have to decide what type of content to post.

It’s no wonder a Reddit post directed toward social media marketers gained a lot of traction in the marketing subreddit. The original poster asked social media marketers for the best piece of social media marketing advice they have ever heard.

The comments were filled with great suggestions that can take your business to the next level. These were some of the highlights.

Don’t Focus On Engagement And Followers

Many social media marketers suggested that your social media accounts are one piece of a larger strategy. It’s not a silver bullet, and if you only focus on engagement and followers, you won’t have a successful business.

“It can be easy to focus only on engagements and followers. These mean nothing if they’re untethered from a bigger strategy or don’t reflect your brand,” one social media marketer said in the comments.

High engagement rates on social media don’t matter if none of those people are visiting your website, joining your email list, or inquiring about your services. That’s where you make the real money on social media. You eventually have to direct people from their platforms to a page that allows you to make money.

“Basically, social media is still marketing. People often treat it as if standard marketing principles aren’t relevant,” another Redditor stated.

Prioritize The Social Networks That Matter The Most

Another suggestion that came up often was that you don’t have to be active on every single social network. You only have to be active on 1-3 platforms that drive the most growth for your business.

Some people are omnipresent on each platform, but many of those same people have teams behind them. It isn’t easy to tweet, post on Facebook, share Instagram pictures, create YouTube videos, and release daily TikTok clips. If you do all of that work alone, you won’t have as much time to focus on business activities that directly produce revenue.

Social media is another marketing channel, and it’s okay to abandon strategies and platforms that aren’t working.

Social Media May Not Be The Right Channel For You

The top comment came from a social media marketer who suggested that social media may not be the right channel to achieve your business goals. It may sound farfetched for brands that view social media as the end-all be-all marketing resource, but there are other ways to stand out.

Local businesses can sponsor local events to get more exposure. Using this strategy consistently can help these companies get in front of more people. You may also find that attending industry events allows you to network with more people and close deals in a way that you can’t with social media.

Most businesses use social media to get in front of more people. However, if your marketing strategy begins and ends with posting exciting social media content, you should tweak your marketing strategy.
