The Powers Of Social Media–Good And Bad

With millions of people using Twitter and billions of people using Facebook, there is no question that social media brings forth a lot of power. Getting a hundred thousand followers on Twitter will allow you to make a lot of money from Sponsored Tweets. There is a lot of power in that regard, the money making aspect, but the power of social media goes beyond those boundaries.

While looking through my Twitter feed, I was able to find an article from the Huffington Post that helped me with a project from one of my teachers. There are many other ways in which social media expresses its power. News can spread on social media much further than before at any point in history. Minor events can easily become major, and major events can get their message out. The people of Egypt know this very well.

Social media can also bring forth danger. A couple of days ago, I heard a very interesting story on television. From what I heard, there were individuals who were trying to assassinate Justin Bieber. Of course nothing happened because then everyone would know about it, but according to police, the individuals who had the plot to do this evil deed knew where Bieber would be and when he would get there–all because of social media. Like him or not, Bieber is one of the most followed people on Twitter with over 31 million followers. A small percentage of his followers (probably less than 1%) are individuals trying to figure out where he will be next and when he will be there.

Social media gives us a lot of power. Some of the powers we gain can be useful while some people use social media to hunt celebrities and other people down. We must be careful every time we click the send or share button because we don’t want to endanger ourselves.
