When it comes to getting more blog traffic, most people rush over to learn more about search engine optimization. By having a blog with good SEO, Google will move your blog posts closer to page one for your blog’s keywords. SEO is an important factor towards getting more blog traffic. However, SEO is also an overrated factor towards getting that traffic.
SEO does have the potential to lead to large traffic stats. Some bloggers get thousands of daily visitors just because they have good SEO. However, it takes a very long time in order to get that many visitors primarily from SEO. It took me over a year before I finally got 100 visitors from search engines in 1 day.
While it is important to make your blog’s SEO better, social media should be the main focus. Not only does social media help out with the SEO, but social media has the potential to drive more traffic to your blog than search engines can. Most of my visitors come from Twitter or Pinterest. Search engines do contribute to some of my blog’s traffic, but social media has contributed to 75% of my blog’s traffic.
It takes a long time before you get to see the results of improving your SEO while you will be able to see an immediate impact if you have enough targeted followers. SEO is important, but similar to how it takes a long time for a seed to become a tree, it takes a long time for you to see a dramatic change in your traffic from search engines.
Brian Appleton says
Definitely true, social media has always been the #1 way I’ve received traffic. I think optimizing social media posts, partially by combining each post with SEO elements like keywords, has also helped.
Marc Guberti says
Definitely. You can also optimize social media posts with hashtags. Each social network is a search engine in its own right, and people like to search for hashtags on social media. That’s why I always include 1-2 hashtags in all of my tweets.
Michael Hale says
Agree. SEO is a passive way to generate traffic. Being active on social media to actively promote your blog seems to be the better approach.
Marc Guberti says
Social media is the better approach although both are necessary.
