There are two entrepreneurs. One entrepreneur is well-rounded. The other entrepreneur specializes in one thing. Which of these two entrepreneurs is more likely to become successful?
The second entrepreneur is more likely to become successful. There are more specialized people that are easier to connect with than ever before. One person offers general advice about social media. There is also someone who specializes in Twitter marketing while there is another person who specializes in getting more engagement from Facebook fans.
The more you specialize, the smaller you make your target audience. Making a target audience may sound like something bad, but the smaller the better. A small target audience does not encounter as many distractions that take them away from your business as a large audience. A small audience of people primarily interested in Twitter will pay more attention to you than an audience interested in social media. An audience interested in social media may decide to look at the person offering consultations about Facebook. On the other hand, the people interested in Twitter will only focus on consultations about Twitter. If you offer consultations about Twitter, your targeted followers will have a stronger reason to use your services if they are only interested in Twitter than if they are interested in social media.
Well-rounded is no longer an option. There are countless people offering specialized services. Well-rounded is ordinary. Specialization is extraordinary.
