The Difference Between Blogging And Social Media

July 31, 2013 by Marc Guberti 8 Comments

I'm happy to see you around. You may want to subscribe to my blog. Thanks for visiting!

Welcome back! I am so happy to see that you have come back for more.

Blogging VS Social Media

Blogging and social media both allow people to share their opinions and thoughts with the people who listen. Promote the link you wanted to promote, share that news status, and more. However, blogging and social media are also very different.

When you blog, your content is all by itself. There is no competition when someone enters the URL to your blog. It’s just your blog post followed by another one of your blog posts. With this method, you can develop a stronger community.

On social media, you will develop a larger community, but larger doesn’t mean stronger. If someone is following thousands of people, chances are they won’t see a lot of your tweets. Social media is also filled with competition because the timeline keeps on updating. A new tweet appears on my timeline every second, and millions of tweets are sent out every day. This is the same for Facebook, Pinterest, Google+, and all of the other social networks. It’s also very easy to get fake followers although fake subscribers to a blog are less likely.

Blogging allows you to develop a strong community and social media allows you to build a large community. It’s quantity against quality. However, if you can mix the two together, you will have a big presence on the web.

    Marc,

You’re irrevocably a genius, you explained it simply. And simplicity will always be the ultimate sophistication.

I just want to add that online social networks/media tend to be more personnality-centered whiled blogs tend to be more topic-centered and are better suited for extremely long posts.

But like you said , the smartest thing to do is to combine both.
    Thanks

Thank you for the compliment Ulysse. That means a lot to me. I would like to say that the differences you are talking about depend on the blogger. Some bloggers are interactive on both social media and their blogs (like me). However, other blogs are more topic-centered. I do understand that more time is spent writing blog posts than the amount of time spent writing social media posts. For the average person, more time is spent interacting on social networks than on a blog. You are definitely right in stating that blogs are better suited for extremely long posts than social networks.

Blogging and social media are both places where people can interact with one another, but how we use the two platforms are different. For example, the content we tweet is different from the content we publish on our blogs (140 characters vs hundreds of words). Blogging and social media are similar but not identical.
