There are a lot of people who have many unrelated goals. The time these people spends accomplishing their goals gets scattered, and as a result, these people know a little bit about many things. In order to have a thriving business, you need to focus on one big goal.
All of your goals should impact the big goal. The big goal may be to increase blog traffic. Using social networks, writing longer blog posts, and doing some research on SEO are some of the things that you would have to do in order to increase blog traffic which is the big goal.
Few people focus on a big goal. However, those people are the ones who we know about. The farmers who plant the small pumpkins don’t get remembered as well as the farmers who plant the giant pumpkins.
You should focus on planting a giant pumpkin instead of planting many small pumpkins. It is better to be an expert in one particular area than to be an expert at everything. An expert at everything is really an expert of nothing, but an expert in a particular area is the expert that is highly sought.
What do you want to accomplish the most? That’s what you need to start first. All of your other goals should be related to what you want to accomplish.

Great article as always, Marc; there is a lot of truth in what you’ve written here. Many people presents something of generic that is good for everyone, but in the end are not specialized on solving the problems of anyone.
Marc Guberti says
It is unfortunate that too many people are generic. I’ve been watching Seth Godin’s Udemy course where he talks about being too generic. The best of the best talk about being generic as if it is a problem. That’s because being generic is bad, but it is a shame that people give themselves that standard.

If you have one giant goal can you use your expertise in different areas to help you accomplish your one big goal, or should you focus your expertise on one are to achieve your ultimate goal, for example what if your an expert in many things and use that to generate your revenue to achieve your big goal?
Marc Guberti says
That’s one way to get a goal accomplished. As long as you are getting the goal accomplished, and it would have a big impact, then you are doing the right thing.

Great Tip Marc! So true- people often fall short of their goals when they’re scattered and therefore can’t focus time or energy. I took a live online workshop last month called “Dream Big. Focus small: Achieve SMARTER Goals”. I learned, one of the main reasons as to why we don’t achieve our goals is feeling pulled in too many directions. It’s important to save our time and energy to focus on the GIANT PUMPKIN!
Marc Guberti says
I agree. The giant pumpkin can end up turning into a bestselling product, or in my current case, a bestselling book. It is better to do one thing really well than it is to do five things in a subpar manner.
