If You Want To Speak To A Representative, Press 1

July 7, 2013 by Marc Guberti Leave a Comment

When we make a phone call, we want to be able to directly contact that person. We have questions, and we want answers. We may just want to talk with a friend. Either way, you’re on the phone to hear a person talk to you, not an automated response.

At first, we are a little irritated. The automated voice gives you the options, and then you press a number. You expect to no longer hear the automated voice. Then the automated voice says a classic, “Please hold.”

That same music plays. It continues to play on. Then the song is over. Then the song starts over. Then another song plays. It’s just a drag. Finally the automated voice comes back telling you that you are on a 30 minute waiting list. The same song plays yet again.

We want to ask a question and get an answer, not hear a song that we could probably listen to on the radio. What’s customer service for? Automated voices don’t make the cut. When there are a lot of callers, there is most likely going to be a lot of money coming in too.

Why not hire more people to take more calls? That music gets old…really fast.

Sleeping Is Overrated (Sometimes)

July 6, 2013 by Marc Guberti Leave a Comment

Everyone needs sleep, but the question is how much sleep we really need. There are a lot of people who recommend sleeping 10 hours every night. Children should get as much sleep as they should get, but what about teenagers and adults?

I decided to change my schedule completely. It is summer, and I have more time to work on my business (and do other things as well). On some days, I get less than 8 hours of sleep. On rare occasions, I get 8 and a half hours of sleep. For me, 9 hours is too much.

Those extra hours can add up. If you sleep an extra hour for a month, you are sleeping for more than an extra day. When school comes back, I will go back to the normal sleeping habits. Staying up until midnight on the day before a test won’t work although I have no problem doing it now.

If you have an important meeting the next day or an important assignment that is due the following day, get the bed rest. If you see any decline in performance, get the bed rest. Other than that, you should be as productive as possible.

Goofing off on the web does not count towards being productive. Surfing the web during late hours will lead to a tougher tomorrow.

Give Yourself Deadlines

July 6, 2013 by Marc Guberti Leave a Comment

We all do better with a deadline, but how about giving yourself multiple deadlines at the same time? Giving yourself a lot of deadlines will make you do more of your work faster. In order to publish 1 book every month, I am working on a majority of the books over the summer so I won’t have to work on as many of them when school starts.

I created a list of books that I needed to get done over the summer. Then I created a deadline for when each book should be done. Book A has to be done this week and Book B has to be done within 2 weeks. I’ll have those books done before school starts, and I’ll have to work on some of my books throughout the year.

I always do better when I give myself a deadline. Deadlines force me to get more of my work done faster. There is no more sitting on the couch and watching TV.

Give yourself deadlines to do your work. This is your time!

Take Out Your Magnifying Glass

July 5, 2013 by Marc Guberti Leave a Comment

Chances are you have a Twitter account. Over 500 million people do. If you don’t have a Twitter account, you probably have a Facebook account. Over 1 billion people do. Maybe you have a Google+, LinkedIn, or another account that involves having fans and followers.

If you want to build on your fan base, you have to take out your magnifying glass. Take a look at the people who are following you. All of the followers who share your content, mention you, and favorite your tweets will have something in common. Maybe all of your followers are social media experts. Your followers might be sports fanatics. Most of the people who are following you will have something in common.

What does that tell you? Now you know what a majority of your followers want. The social media experts want articles about social media and the baseball fans want articles about the latest trades.

Know your audience. Knowledge is power.

The One Moment I Did Not Want To See A Chocolate Cake

July 5, 2013 by Marc Guberti Leave a Comment

That was the one moment that the chocolate cake was in this room. Friends came over for the 4th of July, and it was fun. The only problem was that I couldn’t eat the cake right away

My stomach churned. My taste buds imagined the chocolate running down my tongue. I knew it tasted good because I had it many times before.

But I couldn’t eat it. The chocolate cake was for everyone who was coming over. It was very difficult for me to work that day. I couldn’t even get a spoon and take off some of the chocolate icing.

The chocolate cake had to be preserved. There was no way out of the fact that I was going to have to wait. As I wrote this blog post, I was staring at the chocolate cake wondering if it would be the best one I’ve had.

For anyone who questions the accuracy to this story, tell me if that chocolate cake is tempting to eat. (especially from this angle where I worked). It took all of the willpower I had to not eat some of that chocolate cake or the icing.

It was a decision between working or eating chocolate cake. Eating a chocolate cake (especially a chocolate one) is the easier of the two options, but it is the work that will allow us to get further. We can eat the chocolate cake now, or we can do the work that will eventually buy us two chocolate cakes. It’s your choice.

We must all be very patient in order to achieve great success. The chocolate cake was the biggest teaser I have ever experienced. The delicious chocolate cake was so close, but it was so, so far away.

Define Gradually

July 4, 2013 by Marc Guberti Leave a Comment

The dictionary will say something like, “steadily moving at a consistent basis for a long period of time.” If someone asked me how entrepreneurs become successful, I would say their success comes to them gradually. I will keep on saying that the success of entrepreneurs comes gradually.

For the lucky few, being successful takes less than 3 years. Most of us will have to wait 5-15 years depending on how much work we do for our business. Do not take this as a sign of discouragement. Entrepreneurs who continue with their businesses eventually find themselves becoming millionaires, and in some cases, billionaires.

When things are going really good for a week or really bad, we need to remind ourselves of the definition of the word gradually. Entrepreneur’s businesses steadily move at a consistent basis for a long period of time. We can jumpstart our businesses and make the process faster, or we can wait for the riches to come and end up waiting for a life time.
