How To Use Influencer Marketing To Reach Millions Of People

March 26, 2018 by Marc Guberti 2 Comments

One of the best ways to expand your brand is to build more relationships. You want as many people as possible to know about your brand. This creates the possibility for loyal customers and referrals.

With influencer marketing, anyone has the power to reach millions of people. The power of your reach depends on the quality and quantity of the relationships.

Initiating The Relationships

One of the best goals you can set is building at least three new relationships every day. That’s enough to have meaningful growth and also give your new relationships the quality they deserve.

My favorite way to initiate relationships and build them over time is to invite people as guests on my podcast. Not only do I provide them with an opportunity, but guests end up talking about themselves and their expertise for 30-45 minutes on my show.

Giving someone that much time to talk about themselves and their craft is a winning formula to building healthy relationships. I say that it’s just a winning formula because there are many out there, but this one is my favorite.

Regardless of how you initiate the relationship, you need to communicate with the person you want to build the relationship with. While an email conversation is the best online conversation, you can also communicate on social media and on their content.

Engage with their social media posts and leave comments on their newest stuff. Constantly be on people’s frame of mind. You can’t be everywhere for everyone but you can be everywhere for someone.

Generating Referrals

The short-term strategy for generating referrals is to ask for them. You need to build a basic foundation of clients and customers.

The most successful brands don’t ask for referrals as much as other brands. They value they provide to the marketplace is so immense that people refer business without receiving a request to do so.

The strategy for long-term referrals is to provide this immense value and attract a big enough audience that the referrals will start coming in on autopilot. You can still ask for referrals if that works for you, but understand that you should consider providing an intense amount of value to get instant referrals.

For instance, how many people mention Gary Vaynerchuk? How many of those people did Gary contact and request that they promote him? That’s the long-term strategy for generating referrals.

Nurture Your Relationships

The great thing about generating referrals is that quality relationships come your way as you initiate more relationship building on your own.

As you get involved in more relationships, you’ll master the quantity game. Now you need to master the quality game.

A quality relationship isn’t defined as quality based on who you have the relationship with. It’s not like one person who has a million followers is a higher quality relationship than the person with just a few hundred followers.

The level of quality is based on mutual trust and respect for each other’s respective crafts.

Even when you have a healthy relationship, keep building on it. Continue contacting people you’ve built relationships with. Comment on their blog posts, retweet them, and do anything else to stay on their radar.

To become successful, you must have a long-term oriented mindset. Nurturing relationships allows you to take a long-term approach within influencer marketing.

Daily Action

Every day, you should do at least one thing to strengthen an existing relationship AND develop a new one.

If you want to achieve success in any area, take daily action. If you find it difficult for you to take action, write a list of reasons for why you need to take action.

Strengthening your why power will fuel you with the motivation you need to take massive action more often. Just as importantly, make sure you take the right action. Not all activities are created equal, and influencer marketing is one of the top activities you need to pursue.

Make sure you only devote your time towards the activities that will lead to the most growth. To get clear on what types of actions you take, set a challenge to track your time this week.

Write down each activity you do and how much time you devote to that activity. When you track your time, you’ll discover what areas you aren’t focusing on enough and what you can eliminate.

You can find extra time in your day for influencer marketing just by tracking your time. This will make it easier for you to apply daily action towards nurturing and building relationships.

Get In Partnerships

If you get people to share your content and products, your message spreads. Each time someone tells their friends about my brand or something I created, my impact expands.

Getting into partnerships is one of the best ways to expand your reach without paying a penny. Instead of investing dollars towards ads, you invest time towards relationships.

Some of these relationships may lead to affiliate promotions. When I hosted the Content Marketing Success Summit, a big percentage of that traffic was from affiliates. I built relationships with those affiliates by applying everything in this blog post.

For some of those affiliates, I went the extra mile. I had promoted some of my affiliates’ offers to my audience in the past. In return, when I asked some of these people about the summit, they promoted the summit. Some of the summit affiliates were also speakers and/or had been interviewed on my podcast.

Of course, if you expect people to promote your content and offers, you must also help them when they ask you. The best, long-lasting relationships are mutual.

In Conclusion

Influencer marketing is growing in importance. While any marketing method has the intent of reaching an audience, influencer marketing places a focus on building relationships that can reap a great harvest later.

You should never build a relationship solely to use someone or because someone has a large audience. However, as relationships become more healthy, and an opportunity presents itself, some of the influencers you built relationships with will be happy to give you a helping hand.

What are your thoughts on these tactics for leveraging influencer marketing? Do you have any tactics for us? Do you have a question for me? Sound off in the comments section below.

You Can’t Schedule The Same Evergreen Tweets Anymore. Do This Instead!

March 24, 2018 by Marc Guberti 6 Comments

twitter rules

The Old Twitter can’t come to the phone right now. Why?

The 2016 U.S. Presidential Election changed the way people view social media. We saw this as Twitter told at least 1.4 million people they saw Russian propaganda during the election.

More recently, we’ve learned about the Facebook and Cambridge Analytica scandal.

But I know you didn’t come here to read about politics. There are plenty of places where you can find that type of content. Why do I bring it up?

Basically, social networks, led by Twitter, made their rules more strict to ensure various problems that emerged into the limelight during the election and beyond didn’t happen in the future.

Most of the rules don’t apply to us. They focus on people who own multiple accounts and use bots to inflate engagement (i.e. 50,000+ bots retweeting each of your tweets).

However, one rule applies to many of us. And it will change the way marketers and brands use Twitter to communicate with their audiences. Here’s the big verdict from Twitter’s automation rules.

“You may not post duplicative or substantially similar Tweets on one account or over multiple accounts you operate.”

You’ll get flagged for spamming and possibly get your account suspended.

MeetEdgar was ahead of the curve with this development. Their team wrote a fabulous article on the subject here. It details how the rules changed (you can also read the comments to see people’s thoughts. Also, let me know your thoughts on the big change).

This blog post will tell you what you can do as a marketer.

Welcome to the New Twitter.

Short-Term Pains For The Long-Term Gain

Twitter marketing evolved from manually scheduling tweets to setting your evergreen tweets to be posted in an endless cycle. Many people have become very comfortable with an autopilot approach to scheduling content, and for some, growing on Twitter in general.

You can’t automate a new tweet to show up on your account every 10-15 minutes anymore. This will create short-term pains for many. As Twitter accounts for the majority of this blog’s traffic, my blog traffic got cut in half overnight. My email list growth is also on the decline.

This is the New Twitter. In the long-term, it will become a higher quality social network. People will think harder about what they tweet. Real-time, unique, and on the fly tweets will become more common. People will spend more time tweeting and engaging with their followers than ever before.

This shift brings us full circle to the primary purpose of Twitter and all social networks: creating a social platform where people can interact with people.

After the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election, more people accused me of being a bot. I’d reply to some of these tweets, and people would realize my account wasn’t a bot but truly me. However, I can see how scheduling tweets to go out every 10-15 minutes can seem robotic.

I saw this constant stream of tweets as a way to continuously provide value to people even when I was asleep. I think people have become more aware and angered about social media bots and want to avoid any account that resembles a bot.

My prediction is that more people on the New Twitter will remember the people who influence them.

They’ll think like this more often: “Wow, Marc tweets great content. I should see what he’s tweeted lately on his profile page.”

Instead of the past mindset which most users had: “Oh, Marc’s tweet is on my feed. I know he tweets great content, and I don’t go to his profile that often. I should click the link and consume his content.”

If you go to Trump’s Twitter a few times each week to see what he’s tweeted, your mindset is changing to the New Twitter way of thinking. But instead of Trump’s account (or in addition to depending on your preferences), more users will view more individual people’s and brand’s tweets several times throughout the week.

You Can Still Automate Some Tweets

While I believe the New Twitter represents a long-term opportunity and immediate improvement from the old version, I believe in some automation.

March 21, 2018, was the last day of my evergreen cycle. I learned that the evergreen feature was disabled when I saw a massive decrease in my Twitter traffic. There’s still a glimmer of hope for anyone who wants to delegate their tweets.

If you blog on WordPress, you can set it up to publicize new blog posts on Twitter. If you publish a blog post every day, you can get an automated tweet on Twitter every day. If you have automation set up for each time you publish new content, you’ll have some content automatically getting tweeted on your behalf. YouTube also makes it very easy for people to tweet their videos upon release.

Let’s say I do the following:

  • 1 Daily YouTube Video
  • 1 Daily Podcast Episode
  • 1 Daily Blog Post

It’s a heavy commitment for a mere three automated tweets per day, but it’s doable. You can also enlist the help of guest bloggers and other contributors so not all of the work is on you.

One thing I’ve noticed about these automated tweets is that they rack up more engagement on the New Twitter since you don’t have a stream of prewritten tweets getting published anytime soon.

I’ve included two of my most recent tweets to show you what I mean.

How To Turn A Blog Post Into A Skillshare Course https://t.co/M0DCAlyz2A pic.twitter.com/U4yqbpMsOT

— Marc Guberti (@MarcGuberti) March 21, 2018

(Notice how I’m embedding more tweets in my blog posts. This is nothing new, but I think it will become more important for growing your Twitter audience and giving your blog visitors more places to find you).

That’s a lot more engagement per tweet than what I normally get. The engagement used to be spread across the 100+ tweets I’d send out every day. Now the engagement is more concentrated.

You’ll Have To Do These Two Things Either Way

I’m going to share an advanced approach to thriving on the New Twitter soon, but before that, we need to lay down the foundation. As marketers, we need to do two things on the New Twitter:

#1: Get People To Your Landing Page

While I am excited about the changes and Twitter’s future, the short-term reality is that Twitter’s new rules cut my blog traffic big time. I will look towards additional tactics to drive traffic to my blog to recoup the traffic I lost.

However, you can’t ignore your Twitter community. They are still people in your audience who appreciate what you do. Plus, I see Twitter users getting a lot more engaged in the future. This might be a long shot, but I believe there’s potential for Instagram-level engagement for tweets in the future.

For anyone who doesn’t understand the reference, it means we’ll see more tweets with dozens of likes and retweets. Possibly hundreds or even thousands…no bots required.

With that said, you still need to get as many of your followers on your email list as possible. If Twitter or any other social network changes their algorithms again, you may lose even more traffic. Your ability to communicate with your email list is not at an algorithm’s mercy.

#2: Tweet In The Moment More

The winners of the New Twitter will tweet more real-time and on the fly content. You can have some automated tweets running in the background that get posted when you publish new content, but those serve as the background.

You’ll ignite more conversations when you tweet in the moment. We first saw this when Oreo tweeted its famous Super Bowl Blackout tweet about dunking in the dark. The Huffington Post remarked, “One of the most buzz-worthy ads of the Super Bowl on Sunday wasn’t even a commercial — it was a mere tweet from Oreo during the blackout.” You can read the entire article here.

I think the New Twitter will have more dunking in the dark moments. Tweets in the moment instead of scheduled weeks, months, or for some, years in advance.

It’s not like dunking in the dark type of tweets died out. It’s just that they will become more prominent.

The Advanced Approach

Think of the New Twitter as the ability to launch products, but instead of launching products, you’re launching conversations.

What do you do if you have a product launch you want to promote, and you want to get more sales? There are many things you can do to boost product sales, but these are the three most effective ways to drive product sales:

Get affiliates to promote your product

Host a webinar

Use deadlines, scarcity, and/or suspense depending on what you’re promoting

What does that mean for the New Twitter. For starters, there will be more Twitter Chats, but these will be planned out and coordinated on a higher level. Think of 100 influencers agreeing to be in the same chat at the same time of day.

Every year when Michael Stelzner hosts Social Media Marketing World, the hashtag #smmw trends on Twitter. You’ll see very lively conversation as people tweet how excited attendees are about the event and speakers. Many of the speakers will tag along with spreading the hashtag and communicating to attendees.

I see that happening with Twitter chats more often. I’d go as far as to recommend Twitter create Chat Groups to build a community for specific chats similarly to how Facebook has Groups.

Hey Twitter, if you follow-up on Chat Groups based on this post, can Jack Dorsey be a guest on my podcast? That would be a moment to remember.

Get as many people to commit to being in the chat as possible before it happens. This is similar to having an army of affiliates promoting your product.

The live discussions you generate within the Twitter chat will be like a webinar. If you do a consistent Twitter chat, you’ll build more exposure as you host more chats.

One of the things marketers will experiment with is the ending of Twitter chats. In the end of a webinar, it’s common for marketers to promote one of their products. While Twitter is not a platform for getting direct sales, it’s interesting to wonder if the chat built a deep enough relationship where people will buy from you on the spot, even through a tweet.

As these chats happen more often, we’ll all develop a more clear conclusion of whether promoting a product at the end of a Twitter chat on this scale would work or not.

Finally, we have deadlines, scarcity, and suspense. Here’s how you can incorporate each of those in a chat. Some of them have more general applications.

  • Deadline: You have two minutes to answer this question
  • Scarcity: This bonus is only good for the first 10 people who buy (if you promote an offer at the end)
  • Suspense: Liked this chat? I’ll publish a blog post containing the recap of this chat. I also have a free training course which I’m going to share soon. Keep a lookout for my tweets because I’m not telling anyone else about this.

The suspense also builds on exclusivity. It doesn’t always have to be like that, but in this case, it was.

You can incorporate these three elements outside of a Twitter chat. Here’s what I did with the tweets leading up to this blog post:

I think I came across a big breakthrough for what Twitter’s future will be like while writing this blog post. It’s really good, even for marketers who like to tweet evergreen. The blog post comes out tomorrow at 9 am eastern on https://t.co/5m6b4SKCbC https://t.co/ivtmvJhSmm

— Marc Guberti (@MarcGuberti) March 23, 2018

In Conclusion

Twitter has changed. Now is the time to explore. I believe the new rules make Twitter an entirely new social network. The game has completely changed. The winners will be the people who embrace the new changes instead of trying to fix the old system Twitter has now deemed as a violation to their rules.

What are your thoughts on Twitter’s new rules? Do you have any additional ideas for how we can use Twitter to grow our businesses? Do you have any questions for me? Sound off in the comments section below.

How To Optimize Your Old Content For More Success

March 23, 2018 by Marc Guberti Leave a Comment

As we strive to create new content for our audiences, it’s easy to forget about our existing content. Our existing content is filled with incredible ideas, and the more content you create, the bigger your library of content is.

You must continually update this library not just by adding more content, but by updating your existing content. Updating your existing content is an easy way to boost the value you provide while giving you an edge on search engines.

Not only that, but now the old piece of content becomes new again. People have another reason to check it out.

When you update your old content, you shouldn’t just add more value. You should also optimize it. That updated piece of content should drive traffic to your newer pieces of content that aren’t doing as well.

Optimizing your content for success isn’t just about optimizing that one post. It’s about optimizing that piece of content for its own success and the success of some of your other content.

Let’s take a deep dive into optimizing old content for more success.

Bulk It Up

When most people think about optimizing their old content for success, they think about bulking it up. This is important on multiple levels.

From a reader’s standpoint, adding more content to an existing piece of content almost always means more value. If I add an extra 500 words to this blog post, it will enhance the value of the blog post.

When you bulk up, always stay on topic. My favorite way of doing this is to skim through the blog post and ask myself, “What did I miss? How could I have made this better?”

Those questions allow ideas to flow through my mind and the words come out naturally. As you bulk up your content, consider everything else from this blog post.

Include Multiple Forms Of Media

You need more pictures within your content. I wasn’t so good at putting pictures in my blog posts so I delegated that step.

I will soon incorporate more than just pictures. In fact, you’ll soon see more embedded videos within my blog posts.

Some of those videos will be mine while other video will be from other people. The reason for video is very strategic.

The first reason is that video is very engaging. It’s the most engaging form of content we can possibly create.

The second reason is that the time you spend on my blog will dramatically increase. My blog in a sense becomes, in part, a hyper-targeted YouTube. If you watch a three minute video on my blog, that increases the time you spend on my site.

If you click on one of the suggested videos that shows up, then you spend even more time on my site.

This isn’t just important from an SEO standpoint, but it’s even more critical from a trust standpoint. If an engaged reader consumes my content for two hours, I know I’ve earned that person’s trust.

You don’t spend two hours on the same blog unless you greatly appreciate the blog, and more importantly for the relationship, the blogger (in this case being me).

Use Inbound and Outbound Links

Incorporating multiple forms of media and bulking up your content will give your existing content the set-up to thrive. Utilizing inbound and outbound links allow you to spread the wealth.

Inbound links are links to your own blog posts. If I include a link in this blog post to one of the other blog posts on this site, that’s an inbound link.

If I link to any outside site like Jeff Bullas’ Site or Forbes, that’s an outbound link.

Both are important.

The inbound links, assuming they are relevant based on the content’s topic, will keep people on your blog longer. This builds SEO, but again, I value this tactic more for the trust building.

Outbound links give your audience relevant articles beyond your content and sends search engines a signal. This content creator promotes these awesome sites we already like. We should boost this person’s search engine rank as well.

Use them throughout your content to give your visitors more options and more reasons to stay on your blog longer.

Optimize The Post For SEO

This is the most interesting tactic on the list because the way you optimize depends on a few factors. Some of your content is better optimized than others, and the level of existing optimization determines your workload.

I currently use the Yoast plugin for optimizing my blog posts. I will focus on a keyword, write a meta description with that keyword in mind, and even adapt the title around that keyword.

Some of my blog posts were published before I knew or used any of these tactics. These blog posts would require an SEO overhaul because I’d have to perform all of these steps. For other blog posts that are already optimized, I can optimize for a second or even a third keyword as well.

My one recommendation is to avoid changing the title, even if it’s not fully optimized. People know that piece of content for its title. In a similar fashion, avoid changing any part of your blog post’s permalink which is basically anything that appears after the slash line after .com

For instance…

yoursite.com/permalink

Don’t change that link in anyway because it will have a very negative effect on your SEO.

In Conclusion

Updating your existing content is more than checking for flaws and correcting them. It’s about enhancing the experience that piece of content provides for your audience.

This new experience you provide can significantly boost engagement, the amount of time people spend on your site, and your search engine ranking.

Once you update an existing piece of content, share it with your audience. Tweet about it, pin it, Instagram it, and do anything else that you desire. You may even want to consider leveraging your email list if there’s space for your updated content in your emailing calendar.

I recommend you update at least one of your blog posts each week. It isn’t too much of an ask, and you won’t see significant results right away, but it’s enough to accumulate results over time.

What are your thoughts about updating your existing content? Do you have any tips for us? Do you have a question for me? Sound off in the comments section below.
