The Best Picture You Should Use For Your Profiles On Social Networks And Elsewhere

April 16, 2014 by Marc Guberti Leave a Comment

There are millions of different profile pictures spread across social networks and elsewhere on the web. However, there are ideal profile pictures and other profile pictures that are not as ideal. While some of the things to avoid are obvious, others are not as easy to detect. When choosing your profile picture, these are some of the things that you need to know.

  1. Never ever use the default option. The Twitter egg profile picture shows inexperience and easily identifies you as a newbie. Right when you start using a social network, get rid of the default picture.
  2. The profile picture must be a picture of you or your company’s logo. Having a picture of yourself or your company’s logo will dramatically improve the number of followers you get on a daily basis. People are more likely to trust you if your profile picture is of you or your company’s logo.
  3. Make your style appeal to your targeted followers. If your targeted followers are social media experts, you need to be wearing a buttoned down shirt or something similar in your profile picture. If your audience is teenagers who love to use Vine, you should dress casual for your profile picture.
  4. Use the same picture for all of your social networks and other places on the web. If your picture remains constant throughout your social networks, people will be able to remember you by your picture. When people remember your picture, they also remember you.

Those are some of the things you need to know so you can make the proper changes to the profiles of all of your social networks and other places where your reside on the web. Do you have any suggestions? Please share your thoughts and insights below.

The Problem With Asking For A Shout Out

March 1, 2014 by Marc Guberti 14 Comments

As someone gets more followers, more people ask for shout outs. No one was asking me for a shout out when I had 100 followers. Now I get some people asking me for shout outs. There are some people who I give the shout out (usually in the form of a retweet), but I avoid giving too many people shout outs. Plenty of celebrities are asked hundreds of times every day to give someone a shout out.

This does not go well with a lot of people because requests for shout outs will clog up these users’ timelines. In the end, shout outs rarely happen.

Let’s say someone asks for a shout out from a power Twitter user with 100,000 followers. If that person does give you the shout out, your Klout score will see a big jump, and the tweet may get retweeted and favorited a few times. Then, everything goes back to normal after the shout out is long forgotten.

You probably want someone in your niche with 100,000 followers to give you a shout out. We all do, and we all have that one person (or many people) who we want the shout out from. People ask for the shout out because they know the shout out will lead to more engagement for their tweets, even if that burst in engagement is short-lived.

The question should not be, “Can I get a shout out?”

The question should be, “How do I get a following like yours so people are asking me to give them shout outs?”

Instead of constantly relying on someone else who may not give many shout outs, create your own opportunity. Ask the person how he/she became popular on Twitter so you can become popular on Twitter and consistently get the engagement results that you want to see. I follow people in my targeted audience who are likely to follow back. That’s how I (and a lot more people than you would think) grow their following on Twitter.

Instead of asking someone with 100,000 followers for the shout out, do the work that will allow you to become the person with over 100,000 followers. It’s easier for everyone.

5 Social Media Myths Debunked

November 17, 2013 by Marc Guberti Leave a Comment

The typical newbie does everything he/she can in order to learn more about social media. However, there are some myths that newbies will think are true. These myths can stagnate progress or make someone go in the wrong direction. These are the 5 big social media myths that trick a lot of people.

  1. There are no golden ratios. A classic one is to post about other people’s content 80% of the time and your content only 20% of the time. Some people only post about their content while others post about their content more than half of the time. If your content is helpful, your followers won’t mind.
  2. Getting over 100,000 followers is possible. The best way to increase your following quickly is by following other people on your social networks, getting follow backs, and posting consistently. Once you find a way to master the system, you could get 100,000 followers before the following year comes to an end. All you need to do is discover a way to consistently gain 274 followers every day. Once you master a way to do that, you will get hundreds of thousands of followers every year.
  3. Your results are going to get a lot better as you go. Whether you are gaining 5 followers every day or 50 followers every day, more people are starting to know about you. As you find more methods to increase your following while continuing to use the methods you are already implementing, you will be able to get hundreds of followers every day.
  4. You should schedule tweets for as many times of the day as you can with HootSuite. Tweeting every 15 minutes is okay as long as you tweet like that on a consistent basis. You won’t annoy your followers by tweeting too many times if you are consistent. Then, your followers will know when to expect your tweets, and as they see you more on their timeline, their trust for you will grow.
  5. Friends will be very helpful towards your success on social media. Some people view the definition of “being in business” as when a stranger buys your product. If your friends share your posts on social media, they are reaching out to a larger group of people. Each time one of my friends shares one of my blog posts, my blog gets more traffic. Your friends are going to be very helpful; don’t be afraid to ask them.
