The Secret Formula To Creating Quality How-To Blog Posts

January 29, 2014 by Marc Guberti 3 Comments

golden egg

What is a quality blog post? There are a lot of definitions of the term. Regardless of the definition you have of writing a quality blog post, it has become more known than ever that writing quality content helps in the process of standing out from the crowd. There is a secret formula that some bloggers use to create quality blog posts, and I am going to share that formula with you. Here’s the secret formula:

  1. Tell people what you are writing about in a clear manner. What is your blog post about? The headline of your blog post tells people exactly what you are going to be talking about. If the headline’s topic is clear, then people will already know the topic of your blog post as they read it.
  2. Have a strong intro. There are millions of blogs to choose from, but your visitors chose your blog. Once they know what your blog post is going to be about, you need a strong introduction. A list of different tactics is not as good as a paragraph or two making the visitor want to continue reading your blog post. Don’t rush into the tactics and the how-to part of your blog post. Give your visitors a quick intro that encourages them to read on.
  3. The first sentence is critical. The first sentence is the difference between having someone read your entire blog post or having someone read another blog. The first sentence needs to grab the visitor’s attention. Common ways to do this are to ask a question, offer a really cool statistic, talk about a big change, or use a testimonial. There are other ways to create a really good first sentence, but it is important to know that the first sentence sets the tone for the entire blog post.
  4. Have good tactics that are organized well. The better your tactics are, the better your blog post can become. Choose your two favorite tactics. Put one of those tactics as the first tactic and put the other tactic as the last one. This is just like the concept of having a dynamic opening sentence and a dynamic closing sentence.
  5. Support your tactics. This is where a lot of people get it wrong. Some people only support their tactics with a short sentence while other people add every word possible to support their tactic so the blog post looks better. A longer blog post does not necessarily equate to a better blog post, but a blog post in which the tactics are poorly supported is not a good one either. I usually support my tactics with a paragraph at most. It is better to support your tactic well with a paragraph than it is to support a tactic well with three paragraphs.
  6. It’s not about the length of the blog post. Seth Godin’s blog post, Polishing Junk, is less than 50 words. Despite that, his blog post was shared over 1,500 times on different social networks. I’m sure there are people reading this blog post saying, “You’re talking about Seth Godin. His blog posts always get shared that many times.” The reason his short blog post got shared many times is because he was able to make his point quickly. He could have added a bunch of statistics and testimonials to his blog post, but he didn’t need to. He already made his point. I’m sure the people who visited that blog post read every word of it. That does not always happen with longer blog posts.
  7. Have a strong conclusion that sums up why the visitors needs to implement the tactics. End your blog post on a good note by telling your visitors what they will be able to accomplish by implementing the tactics you talked about. The conclusion needs to grab their attention just as much as the introduction so you leave the visitor wanting more.

By implementing these tactics, you will be able to write how-to blog posts that grab the attention of more people. When you grab more attention for your blog posts, more people will share your blog posts. Sooner or later, you may end up like Seth Godin and get over a thousand people sharing all of your blog posts. That only becomes possible when you write quality blog posts. After you master writing quality blog posts, the only thing left to do is get more traffic. As you share your blog posts on your social networks, and your traffic numbers go up, people will read as many of your blog posts and sharing as many of them as they can.

How Sticky Notes Have Become A Big Part Of My Success

January 28, 2014 by Marc Guberti 9 Comments

sticky notes

The scenario I am about to describe happens to everyone. The scenario happens to some people more than others, but it happens to everyone. The scenario is the “I forgot” scenerio where something was important, needed to get done by the end of the day, and did not get completed.

Some people encounter the scenario too many times. I used to encounter the scenario frequently as well. The goal of writing 4 blog posts in 1 day turned into a day where no blog posts were written simply because I forgot about the goal. Other goals took its place and I used my time doing different things.

That problem stopped happening once I decided to use more sticky notes. I have all of my sticky notes next to my computer. While I am typing, I quickly look over the sticky notes to remind me of everything that I need to do for the day. Sometimes I use 3 sticky notes in 1 day. Other times, I use 10 sticky notes in 1 day. The amount of sticky notes I use primarily depend on how many things I need to do before the end of the day.

Although I did not start doing this in the New Year, I am going to start saving all of the sticky notes. At the end of 2014, I am going to look at all of the sticky notes that I wrote for the first half of January, and all of the 11 months of the year. Then, I’ll lay them all out on a table to see all of the goals I gave myself to accomplish in the year. We will all be able to figure out if all of the sticky notes will take up the entire table or if I need a second table to put my sticky notes on.

Sticky notes allow me to remember what needs to be done so I have less “I forgot” scenarios. After I write something on a sticky note, the only thing left to do is implement. Sticky notes have become a big part of my success, and when you use sticky notes, they will become a part of your success as well.

8 Ways To Bring Up Your Klout Score

January 28, 2014 by Marc Guberti 2 Comments

Your Klout score allows people to know how influential you are on the web. Having a high Klout score can give you more opportunities and more admiration from others in your niche. Whether your Klout score is in the 70’s, 60’s, 50’s or below that, increasing your Klout score is a great way to increase your influence on the web. Many times, when people see someone in their niche with a high Klout score, they are automatically influenced by that person. Since the first time I saw Jeff Bullas’ Klout score, I have been actively reading his blog posts and subscribed to his blog.

There are benefits to having a high Klout score, but in order to boost your Klout score, follow these 8 tips:

  1. Build a targeted following. In order to build a targeted following, find people in your niche with over 100,000 followers and follow their followers. Make sure the people you follow through this method are the people who are likely to follow you back. Following a targeted audience will result in more people mentioning you and starting conversations with you as well.
  2. Tweet content that is worthy of retweets. Retweets are a factor towards boosting your Klout score. By tweeting quality content, you will get more retweets which in turn will boost your Klout score. An easy way to get more retweets is by tweeting inspirational quotes and amazing pictures.
  3. Build a following on your other social networks. Klout score is based on the accumulation of your social networks. The more social networks you have, the higher your Klout score will be. By being influential on multiple social networks, your Klout score will rise.
  4. Host a giveaway that requires people to mention you in order to win. As the amount of people mentioning you increases, your Klout score will increase as well. Increasing your Klout score is one of the many benefits of hosting your own giveaway.
  5. Turn your followers into big fans. Not all of your followers will go from followers to fans, but your fans are more likely to engage with you on your social networks and share your posts.
  6. Interact with your followers…a lot. The more you interact with people, the more your Klout score increases. If someone shares your article, thank that person for sharing your article. That way, your Klout score increases, and that person is more likely to share more of your articles as well.
  7. Ask your friends for help. If your friends retweet your tweets, like your pictures, and interact with you on social networks, they are contributing to your Klout score. Ask them to help out, and they will probably say yes.
  8. Be consistent and stick with it. If you stick with it, you are going to see your Klout score rise dramatically. Soon enough, you will see your Klout score going from the 40’s to the 50’s and beyond.

By boosting your Klout score, you will be given more opportunities to network with the people in your niche. In addition, more of your followers will turn into loyal customers who become eager to buy your products.

Why Your Klout Score Is Important

January 27, 2014 by Marc Guberti 18 Comments

You may have an idea about what Klout is, and you may know it is important. However, most of the experts simply say that Klout is important and leave you trying to figure out the “why” part of the question.

Klout measures the accumulation of your influence on your social networks. That means the more social networks you add, the higher your Klout score goes. According to these statistics which occasionally change, the average Klout score is 40 while having a Klout score of 63 or better would put you in to Top 5% of Klout.

People love to see big numbers. The motivational speaker with 100,000 followers and the big blue check mark is going to get more opportunities than the motivational speaker with 10,000 followers and no big blue check mark. Klout score is popular because it goes beyond the number of followers someone has in order to identify how influential someone is.

More people than ever are paying attention to Klout score. Sam Fiorella did not make the interview process for a job just because his Klout score was a 34. The company ended up hiring someone who had a Klout score of 67. Having a higher Klout score also means more perks. I received the Klout Perk from Geico which was an oversized GEICO gecko and a signed picture of the gecko with a thumbs up.

Besides getting free stuff and getting the job, there are other ways that having a high Klout score is beneficial. For entrepreneurs who do not plan on applying for a job, having a higher Klout score will expose you to more webinars, public speaking events, and a more loyal fan base. The entrepreneurs that we know very well also happen to be the entrepreneurs with the high Klout scores.

Klout score is important towards identifying how influential someone is on the web. At the time of writing this blog post, my Klout score is currently 64, but my score changes periodically.

5 Things To Know Before Creating A Blog

January 27, 2014 by Marc Guberti 19 Comments

If you have your own blog, welcome to the club (it’s a big one). For the people who do not have a blog, whether that be you or one of your friends, these are 5 things that people without blogs should know about before starting.

  1. The road is tough, but the treasure is on the other side of that road. When you are blogging, you will never know how close you are to getting that big increase in traffic. It took me almost a year of blogging before I saw a dramatic increase in traffic. This picture will give you an idea of the dramatic increase in traffic your blog can get.
  2. Choose your URL carefully. A really long URL is more challenging to remember than a short URL. When in doubt, have your name as the URL to your blog.
  3. The first blog post does not get tons of traffic. In fact, that first blog post may not get any traffic at all. However, all of that traffic will come sooner or later.
  4. The success you achieve from blogging depends on how much time you put into it. Publishing blog posts only once a month that are always short shows that blogging does not take up a lot of time. In order to be a well-known blogger, you should dedicate 15-30 minutes a day to blogging.
  5. Use WordPress. Their plugins are awesome, the statistics tell you a lot about your blog, there are plenty of themes to choose from, and the dashboard organizes all of WordPress’ features where you can easily access them. Whether you use the dot-com or dot-org version of WordPress, it is the best option for bloggers.

Are you ready to create your own blog? Do you have any questions? Please share your thoughts below.

Quality Content Is Not Enough

January 26, 2014 by Marc Guberti 2 Comments

Quality content is enough to become good at writing about a certain topic.

Quality content is not enough to get noticed.

The people don’t just come. They need to see where they are going before they can get there.

Quality content sets up the foundation.

You need visitors in order to build on that foundation.

People need to see that quality content before all of the retweeting and repinning takes place.

After you get the people, the quality content will make them want more.

Quality content is a key factor towards success, but it is not enough.

Getting people to see that quality content will allow your blog to experience exponential growth.
