20 Social Media Statistics That You Need To Know

It’s always difficult to decide which social network you should use. All of the social networks have millions of members. I use Twitter and Pinterest every day. I will be using other social networks every day as well (Instagram, Tumblr, and Google+).

I am not jumping right into those social networks because it’s better to focus on an individual social network. Once I reach 3,000 followers on Pinterest, I’ll incorporate another social network into my business plan (UPDATE: I now have over 3,000 followers on Pinterest).

You may be juggling around social networks, or you don’t know which social network is right for you. These are 20 interesting statistics that will help you decide which social network to use.

  1. Pinterest users spend an average of $180 per purchase which is far greater than any other social network. Facebook users are second at $85.
  2. The fastest growing demographic on Twitter is the 55-64 age bracket.
  3. Companies that generate over 1,000 likes also receive nearly 1,400 visitors on their website a day.
  4. 50% of Twitter users are more likely to purchase from brands they follow.
  5. 80% of pins are repins.
  6. 40% of marketers use Google+.
  7. 45 million photos are uploaded to Instagram every day. That’s 521 photos every second!
  8. Instagram has grown very fast in less than 3 years.
  9. 24% of teenagers who use the web also have Twitter. Some of them are moving from Facebook to Twitter.
  10. Facebook has 665 million users who are active every day.
  11. Over 6 billion hours of video are watched every month.
  12. Companies with over 1,000 followers generate more than 800 visitors to their website every month. I can vouch for that.
  13. Pinterest hit 10 million unique U.S. visitors per month faster than any other website in history. It’s growing, and it’s growing fast.
  14. One out of every 7 minutes spent online is on Facebook.
  15. The average Pinterest user has 171 pins, 229 followers, 3 boards, and 28 likes.
  16. 720 million minutes were spent using Pinterest’s mobile app in 2012.
  17. 60% of Google+ users log in every day while 80% of Google+ users log in every week.
  18. Every minute, 700 YouTube videos are shared on Twitter.
  19. There are 2.1 million LinkedIn groups.
  20. Over 400 million tweets are sent every day.

If It Were Easy

Everyone would be doing it.

If being a bestselling author was easy, everyone would be writing their own book and becoming the next bestselling author.

If having a million Twitter followers was easy, everyone would be on Twitter talking with over a million followers.

If having a mansion was easy, everyone would move into a mansion or turn their house into a mansion.

If having a successful business was easy, everyone would be an entrepreneur, and none of them would quit. Sadly, over 90% of them quit within the first 5 years.

If coming up with a big idea was easy, everyone would be thinking of big ideas. The people who can’t think of big ideas sell products similar to their competition.

If running the mile was easy, everyone would be running that mile without stopping. It isn’t as easy as it appear.

However, it’s not easy. That’s why few people do the difficult tasks. The safety zone is not safe at all. Everyone is in the safety zone which makes individuals in the safety zone become invisible.

Becoming a bestselling author, having a million Twitter followers, having a mansion, having a successful business, coming up with a big idea, and running the mile are not easy. As we get more experience, these tasks become easier.

After writing a lot of books, an author can build a following and eventually become a bestselling author.

After consistently tweeting for years and going viral, it is possible for someone to reach a million followers without knowing how to sing well or buying a million followers.

Everyone who started with a business started at the bottom. Macintosh computers were first made in garage. Now Apple is a multibillion dollar company that pays billions of dollars in taxes. They can pay those billion dollars in taxes and still make a profit with their Macs, iPhones, iPads, and more. Amazon started out as a bookstore. Now Jeff Bezos is a billionaire who recently bought the Washington Post. Not bad for “another bookstore.”

When someone thinks of a big idea, and creates a business based on that big idea, that person has a good chance of becoming successful. Twitter, Facebook. Instagram, Pinterest, and Google are some of the big ideas. The person who came up with an idea for any of these social networks (or Google) is either a millionaire or a billionaire. That’s not bad for an idea that started out on paper. Back in 2004, people would have looked at you funny if you talked about Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, or Pinterest. Google was around at that time, but Google+ was not.

Running the mile becomes easy after a lot of practice. People give up when they run the mile for the first time because it’s excruciating. The people who run day after day will be able to easily run the mile.

It’s not easy, but with practice, dedication, and commitment, you will make it easy.

Look At The Flaws And The Big Picture

Nothing is perfect. The best business is going to have a flaw or two. The best event will have some flaws as well.

Summer is a great time for people to relax, work on their businesses, and control their own schedules. That sounds incredible, but there are some flaws with summer. All of the insects don’t come out. They come in. There are more ants everyday. Figuring out how they get in is just as hard as taking them out of the house.

Google gives us a lot of different products to try. Is Google able to answer all of our questions? The answer is no, but there are many people who are happy with Google. Most people use Google for the search function while some people use Google’s products such as AdSense and Google+.

Summer and Google have their flaws. Sadly, there are a lot of people who only look at the flaws. Instead, we should look at the flaws and the big picture. Summer is a great time to relax and have fun. Summer symbolizes the end of school for 3 months and more vacation time.

Google is the difference between going to the library to look for information on a rainy day or being able to access the information you need on your computer while watching the rain fall. I do not know what it felt like to go to the library everyday to find information for a school project. I don’t want to go through that experience anytime soon, and Google prevents that from happening.

Something may not be working the way you wanted it to. Your guest post to a well-known blog could have been disapproved or you lost a lot of followers on one day. Do look at the flaws, but also look at the big picture.

If you were trying to submit a guest post, it means you had something such as a Twitter account or a blog to promote. If you lost a lot of followers on one day, it means you had a lot of followers, and going from 1,000 followers to 900 followers still means that you have 900 followers.

The big picture is a painting. The flaw is just a yellow dot on the painting. You get to choose how big you make that yellow dot.

You Can’t Win By Being The Person You’re Trying To Beat

Google remains the most visited search engine among the other search engines such as Yahoo and Bing. Since Yahoo bought Tumblr and there was a Google VS Bing challenge, I decided to compare the search engines.

It seems as if there are more ads on Yahoo’s search engine results than there are links to websites that are not advertised. After a head count, there are 13 non advertised links and 10 advertised links. Some of the searches tend to show fewer ads, but there are going to be at least 5 of these ads on a page. By the way, blogger Barry Schwartz points out in this post that Yahoo didn’t wish the fathers a happy Father’s Day.

That leaves Google and Bing to fight it out. In the Google VS Bing challenges, I ended up choosing Bing as the winner. The problem with the Google VS Bing challenges is that I couldn’t tell the difference. Bing wasn’t going to tell its visitors what they picked until they made their decision. That’s why I and other people who did it couldn’t tell the difference between the two search engine.

Google has been around for 8 more years than Bing. Google and Bing both get billions of searches, but Google is getting more searches than Bing by far. Looking like the best does not mean that you are the best. Bing does look like Google, but Google remains the top search engine.

If you want to stand out from the crowd, you can’t try to imitate someone who is already standing out from the crowd.

Yahoo! Offered $1 Billion To Someone ELSE Back In 2006

Yahoo! made a great move buying Tumblr for $1.1 billion. Advertising will allow Yahoo! to make more money from Tumblr, and combined with Flickr, Yahoo! is definitely something to watch for. Yahoo! took on the challenge of turning Tumblr into a profit. Tumblr made about $13 million in revenue last year, but that won’t be enough to get a profit, especially since the price was $1.1 billion.

Google was able to buy YouTube back in 2006, and it has turned into a big success story. Google has profited immensely from buying YouTube. Yahoo! offered someone $1 billion for his Social Media website–Mark Zuckerberg.

Buying Facebook would have led to a huge profit assuming Facebook would have been the same either way. However, Zuckerberg turned down the $1 billion even when Facebook wasn’t the Social Media powerhouse it is today. When Zuckerberg was offered $1 billion, Facebook did not have over a billion members. By the way, Facebook now easily generates billions of dollars every year.

There are times when we have to back off and let a deal be done. Tumblr wasn’t going to make $1.1 billion in the direction it was going. Tumblr still continues to be successful, but with Yahoo’s purchase, Tumblr can be monetized more properly. There are also times when you have to stick it out and say no to a really good deal. Zuckerberg said no to Yahoo’s offer, and it was a great decision for him.
